TRAVERSE CITY — Robert Joseph Lewis, of Traverse City, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at his home in Traverse City. He was 86.
He was born on April 18, 1927, in Highland Park, the only child of Joseph S. and Minnie V. (Nelson) Lewis, both of whom have preceded him in death.
On Nov. 19, 1951, he married Katherine J. Peterson, who preceded him in death June 12, 2004. Bob and Katherine lived in the Detroit area for many years and following their retirement in 1987, they moved to the Traverse City area.
Bob was the former manager of Export Credit and manager of Finance and Administration International Parts, Chrysler Corporation in Detroit.
He was a graduate of Cooley High School, Michigan State University and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
A veteran of World War II, he served 13 months in Italy. After 42 years of active and reserve assignments he retired with the rank of Colonel, Field Artillery. His last two assignments were with the Assistant Chief of Staff Intelligence DA and the Inspector General, Department of the Army, Washington, D.C.
He was a life member of Detroit Lodge No. 2 F&AM, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Association of the U.S. Army, Military Order of World Wars and National Sojourners. He was also a member of The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City.
Graveside services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Acacia Park Cemetery, 31300 Southfield Road, Beverly Hills, MI.
