Frederick William Rearick II

Traverse City Record-Eagle

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Fred Rearick, 63, died on July 21, 2013, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his family and friends. He passed away peacefully after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Fred was born on June 12, 1950, in Alma, and is the younger of two children. His family moved to Beulah in Benzie County soon after he was born.

He graduated from Benzie Central High School, where he played football, wrestled, ran track and played saxophone in the school band.

He worked as a carpenter in Benzie County during his early adult years before moving with his family to Corona, Calif., in 1988. Fred went to work for Target and continued his employment in California for several years before his transfer to the Traverse City Target store in 2011. Fred had returned to Beulah to be near his family.

Fred loved all things outdoors including skiing, golfing, mushroom hunting and fly-fishing for trout on the Betsie and Au Sable rivers, but his favorite of all was ice fishing on Crystal Lake in the winter. He was an avid Detroit sports fan and relished attending Tigers and Red Wings games when they played in California to generate friendly banter with the hometown fans.

Fred found humor easily, told a great story and played practical jokes. He engaged in lively political arguments where his strong opinions became crystal clear. Fred’s many friendships were strong and enduring and he will always be remembered for his genuine, generous and fun-loving ways with others from his friends made in childhood to his work families at Target.

In his final weeks Fred never complained about his illness but focused instead on his family and friends. His enthusiasm would not give in; he craved going fishing or playing a round of golf just one more time.

Fred is survived by his mother, Doris “Pink” Rearick, of Beulah; his sister, Barbara Myers, of Beulah; his daughters, Danielle (Tim Barrons) Rearick and Sadie (Matthew) Cartledge, both of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Finnegan Cartledge and Parker Barrons; and nephew, Jed Myers, of Beulah.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick W. Rearick.

By Fred’s request, all his family, friends and co-workers are invited to a celebration of his life on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the picnic pavilion on Beulah Beach. Food will be provided.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fred’s grandchildren’s education trust fund. Please send donations to Danielle Rearick, 626 West Eighth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.

Cremation has taken place with arrangements handled by Jowett Family Funeral Home.
