Alice M. Mullins

TRAVERSE CITY — Alice Margaret Mullins, 76, died July 10, 2010, at Munson Hospital in Traverse City after a long illness.

Mrs. Mullins was born May 6, 1934, in Detroit to Ida and Daniel Dyni whose families both emigrated from Finland. Mrs. Mullins was the third of four daughters. She lived in metro Detroit with her husband and children until 1977 when they moved to Traverse City. She loved the beauty and tranquility of the woods and lakes of northern Michigan.

Mrs. Mullins was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where for several years she served as church organist and in other capacities. She loved classical music and opera. She could beat anyone hands-down in a Sudoku challenge or double solitaire, and was an avid knitter. She was known for her generous hospitality. She and her husband ran Big Beaver Antiques in Troy and then in Traverse City for more than 40 years. As antiques dealers they traveled extensively through England and did antique shows around the Midwest.

Mrs. Mullins is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lowell; her son, Dan, of Lewiston; three daughters, Anne of Los Angeles, Margaret of Ypsilanti, and Jeanne of Turkey; and 16 grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, MaryAnn Calvillo of Portland, Ore., and Catherine Kollin of Juneau, Alaska; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Helen.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1896 Rogers Road and U.S. 31 in Interlochen, and officiated by the Rev. Timothy Brand. The visitations will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 13, and Wednesday, 10-10:45 a.m., at the church. Flowers or memorials may be sent to the church.

The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee.
