---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Robert D. Winter “R.D.,” 79, of Traverse City, formerly of Bay City and Panasofkee, Fla., passed away surrounded by loving family on Sept. 11, 2013, at Munson Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 20, 1933, in Traverse City, son of Charles D. and Mildred R. (Hilley) Winter. He was the grandson of Michael J., of County Kerry, Ireland, and Cora Hilley.
R.D. grew up in the old Slabtown area of Traverse City. He loved to spend summers on Grand Traverse Bay, where he served as a lifeguard at the Clinch Park Beach.
He attended Maple City High School before joining the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving in Wichita Falls, Texas. There he met his bride, Linda G. Berry, of Oklahoma. After honorable discharge from the Air Force they settled back into Traverse City.
R.D. was a fun-loving Irishman who had wildly diverse experiences and interests. As a young man he had raced stock cars, did stunt car driving and rodeo clowning; he participated in Mustang auto rallies and ice racing on Houghton Lake at Tip Up Town. He continued a lifelong interest in reading, trains, planes, cars and Great Lakes history. He had a talent for visual arts and was a hobby magician.
R.D. was a talented salesman, beginning his career selling the Record-Eagle on the streets of Traverse City during World War II. He later made a career out of insurance and independent business sales.
Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Linda; children, Rolinda (Tom) LeMay, Simone (Christopher) Kranz and Erik (Chris) Winter; grandchildren, Alexis and Gabriel LeMay, and Gregory and Elizabeth Winter.
R.D. was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Meagan Rose Winter.
A small private memorial service and wake will be held for family and friends.
