GRAND RAPIDS — Robert E. Pearson, M.D., passed away at his home in Grand Rapids on Aug. 31, 2013, at the age of 90. Dr. Pearson was a proud member of “The Greatest Generation,” husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, World War II veteran, pilot, physician and educator.
He and his family moved to Traverse City from Boyne City in 1966 so he could attend a residency in psychiatry at the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital.
Upon completing his residency and becoming a board certified psychiatrist, Dr. Pearson remained at the State Hospital, where he eventually became the chief of adult services and director of the residency program. Dr. Pearson retired from the hospital in 1983 when budget cutbacks at the hospital convinced him that they were not providing the care he believed was required. He moved to Houston, Texas, to enter the private practice of psychiatry.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Kamerschen; sons, Robert, Michael, Eric and Brian; daughter, Kate; and his cousin and close lifelong friend, Dale Anderson.
His daughter, Barbara, predeceased him.
We are grateful to Odyssey Home Hospice for their wonderful care in his last seven weeks of life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. The family will receive visitors today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Mortuary.
