Carol Ann Popp Died Aug. 25, 2013

TRAVERSE CITY — Carol Ann Popp, 75, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.

Carol was born on Aug. 19, 1938, to the late Vernon “Pete” and Irene “Jean” (Kolak) Bauer in Saginaw. The family moved to the Lake Leelanau area when Carol was in the eighth grade. She married her high school sweetheart, Raymond Popp, on May 4, 1957, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau.

Carol’s most important work was as a devoted mother and homemaker but also worked for RL Polk for several years and then in the Immaculate Conception Rectory. She achieved her dream of self-employment in 1986 when she and Ray bought the famous Dairy Lodge in Traverse City. She ran the business the way she lived her life, with a focus on service to others. They just celebrated their 28th successful summer in business.

In her spare time Carol enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and her visits to the casino. But her favorite times were as a dedicated fan of her grandchildren’s every activity. She was passionate about being at every event to support their various endeavors.

Carol was also a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish.

Family was most important to Carol. Through the years she loved to entertain and feed them, but mostly just loved having them together. In the early years Carol and Ray took in over 40 foster children, most of them infants. She touched so many lives. She took great joy in watching her children and grandchildren all grow into beautiful people.

Carol will be fondly remembered for her generous heart and compassion for others. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Surviving Carol are her devoted and loving husband of 56 wonderful years, Ray; children, Julie (Ron) Reamer, Shirley (Dr. Tony) Aboudib, Jennifer (Joe) Kopicki, Ron (Bridget) Popp, Stacey Popp, Patrice (Scott) Korson, Stephanie Popp and Dean (Rita) Popp; as well as 38 foster babies throughout the years. Left to miss their grandma, known affectionately as “Busia,” are her grandchildren, Courtney Kipke, Eric (Mary) Reamer, Isabelle Reamer, Rachel (Joshua) Schleenbaker, Nicole, Danielle and Angie Aboudib, Jessica, Jay and Matthew Kopicki, Ben, Spencer and Luke Popp, Maddee and Zach Popp, Mary Myers, Kayla Roecklein, Grant (Jayne) Litton, Darryn (Alena) Litton, Jeremy and Kaylin Litton; and great-grandchildren, Alaiyah Reamer and Isaiah Litton. Carol’s siblings, Rose (Ken) Mead, Vern (Kathy) Bauer, Mary Schaub, Marge (John) Sawyer and Joan (Dan) Kohler will sadly miss their eldest sister who cared very much about honoring her parents’ memory by keeping the family close. The family members and friends who loved Carol are too numerous to mention.
