---- — BEULAH — James W. Lyons, M.D., 96, of Beulah, died Aug. 21, 2013 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. He was born July 18, 1917 the son of late Estelle (Stonerode) and James White Lyons.
Jim and his wife Dee first met attending the University of Michigan where Jim earned his medical degree. They married on Sept. 7, 1940, celebrating nearly 73 years of marriage this year.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War II. While in Ft. Hood he was in charge of three wards of orthopedic patients. He was a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a fellow member in the American College of Surgeons. He also established the first bone bank in Marquette, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Dee” (Rogers); children, Elisabeth (Dave) Neiger, Cynthia (Michael) Rossmeisl, Scott (Debi) Lyons, Kenneth (Jan) Lyons, Thomas Lyons and Jeffrey (Debbie) Lyons. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Benzonia Congregational Church, with Pastor Dan Furman officiating. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Mills Community House Renovation Project or Benzonia Congregational Church.
