---- — CLERMONT, Fla. — Patricia Anne Schafer (Pat), of King’s Ridge in Clermont,Fla. passed away on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013 at Mike Conley’s Hospice House in Clermont. Pat was 84 years old and suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Pat was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. on March 22, 1929, to William and Marguerite Devereaux. She graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelors degree, majoring in home economics and minoring in journalism. Pat worked for the Chicago Tribune and was married to Roger Schafer on Aug. 27, 1955 in Lansing, Mich. Together they have five children all successfully graduating with university degrees.

In addition to the Chicago Tribune her career included being a published author of The Lottery, writing for the Traverse City Record Eagle, and Traverse the Magazine. She also contributed to her community in many ways serving as: coordinator of many of their children’s extracurricular activities and President of the Ladies Golf Association for both Traverse City Country Club and Imperial Lakes Country Club in Lakeland, Fla.

Pat thoroughly enjoyed golf, bridge, theatre and travel.

Pat is survived by her husband, Roger; daughter, Peggy Schafer-Roberts (husband Steve Roberts); son, Mike Schafer (wife Mary); son, Mark Schafer (Joey Zimmerman); daughter, Ann Warren (husband Weldon); daughter, Becky Terrill (husband Jeff); 11 grandchildren, Cheyenne Schafer, Elizabeth and Stephanie Schafer, Tess, Erin, J.R. and Timothy Warren, Charlie, Michael, Natalie, and Nicholas Terrill, and Pat’s brother Bill Devereaux Jr. She was predeceased by daughter Cathy Schafer (1957).

Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 720 12th Street, Clermont, FL 34711. The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013 at Becker Funeral Home 806 West Minneola Ave. Clermont, FL 34711.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia research for a cure (alz.org) or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Clermont, Fla.
