Lois Jean Holmberg

MUSKEGON — Mrs. Lois Jean Holmberg, widow of Roy Sr., passed away. Jean was born on April 25, 1921, to Inez Lydia (Farley) and Edwin F. Hopper in Hart.

She grew up on the family farm where she loved exploring the fields and woods with her best friend, Rose Krause, and learning all the wild flowers that grew there. The farm remained her favorite place.

Jean’s mother died when she was 10 years old, her father when she was 15. She then moved to Muskegon to live with her older sister, Isabel Ward, and her family.

Jean met her sweetheart, Roy Everett Holmberg, at a dance in the Mona Lake Pavilion and on June 29, 1940, they eloped to Bryon, Ohio. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She enjoyed gardening and became a Master Gardener in her 80s. She learned to sew in 4-H as a girl and was a talented seamstress and quilter. She was an employee of Fenstemacher’s Fabrics and a member of Lumbertown Quilters.

She was a self-taught pianist and an avid reader. She loved walks in the woods, golf, music, attending the symphony with her good friend, Phyllis Howard, and most of all, being with her family.

She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Vikings Linne Lodge #57.

Jean is survived by her six children, Ann (William) Hosken, of Kalamazoo, David (Shirlee Sodini) Holmberg, John (Penny) Holmberg, Roy (Donna) Holmberg Jr., all of Muskegon, and Lynne Holmberg and Janet (Gary) Baillod, of Traverse City. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Dan (Bekki) Hosken, Kim Eberstein, Dustin, Hannah, Roy (Jessica) III and Carley Holmberg, Amanda Foust, Craig and Brandan Swanson, Jennifer (Mike) Nyberg, Greg (Jenny) Balloid, Krystle (Sean) Ryke, Robby Wagner, Michael, David and Emmarie Hotwagner; 10 great-grandchildren, Rachel, Holly, Madelyn, Olivia, Graham, Jack, Ben, Cayden, Mylee and Mason; and many nieces and nephews.
