---- — ANN ARBOR — John Richard Freethy passed away at home on Sept. 4, 2013. John was born in Big Rapids on Dec. 31, 1924.
He grew up in Traverse City and graduated from Traverse City High School. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II in the South Pacific.
After his service he entered the University of Nebraska, majoring in music education, and ultimately earned a master’s degree from Northern Michigan University.
In 1966 he changed careers from music to work in computer science until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joann; four daughters, Kathy Eisenberg (Andy), Margery Dusek, Barbara Whited (Leon) and Mary Joann Petredean (Tom); one sister, Lauraine Freethy; eight grandchildren, David, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Ryan, Barbara, Thomas, Angela and Christopher; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m., in Monteith Hall, First Presbyterian Church, 1432 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
