---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Aloysius J. “Luke” Staal, 88, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions surrounded by his family. Luke was born to the late Joseph F. Staal and the late Bernadina M. Van Roosmalen-Staal on June 7, 1924, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
His education was interrupted as of May 10, 1940, when the Germans invaded the Netherlands. During World War II he spent two-and-a-half years as a forced displaced person in Germany.
He married Irene J. Heunders in Maastricht, the Netherlands, on Dec. 27, 1954, and they then proceeded on their honeymoon to immigrate to the U.S.A. They initially lived in Lynbrook, Long Island, N.Y.
Luke worked for the Knott Hotels in New York City area and spent 20 years with the Hilton Hotels Corporation. He held various management positions at many different locations.
He was a member of the Rotary Clubs in East Point, Ga., Riverhead, N.Y., as well as in Troy. He also was a member of Kiwanis Club #1 in Detroit and the Detroit Executives Association as well as the Skal Club of Detroit.
After leaving the Hilton Hotels Corporation, he became the general manager of the Fontana Village Resort, Fontana Dam, N.C., near the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, eventually moving to Franklin, N.C., for 20 enjoyable years.
Luke was preceded in death by his first wife of 36 years, Irene Heunders-Staal; two sisters, Bernie Verschuuren-Staal and Elisabeth Meijssen-Staal; and two infant children, Mary-Ann Staal and John-Anthony Staal.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Antoinette M. “Toni” Staal; his children and their families, Peter (Debra) J. Staal, of Troy, and Jaclyn B. (Noel) Staal-Lewke, of Colonial Heights, Va.; eight grandchildren; stepchildren, Dr. Rebecca Yount and Deborah Marois; and several nieces and nephews in the Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand.
Private family services will take place at a later date.
