LELAND — Emil J. Priest, 81, of Leland, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. Emil was born March 18, 1931, in Suttons Bay, the son of Willard and Mary (Perrault) Priest.
He married Marie Stander on Feb. 25, 1951; she survives. He and Marie started their married life in Lansing and lived there for 14 years before moving back to Leelanau County.
Emil worked as a carpenter for Hohnke and Easling Construction. He was a volunteer for the Leland Volunteer Fire Department.
He loved fishing, hunting and playing euchre.
Emil is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie; four children, Alan (Mary), Dan (Linda), Kathy (Tim) Eggert and Penny Starkey; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, with one on the way.
Emil was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Todd; a grandson, Jacob Starkey; and three brothers, Norman, Ralph and Donald.
To honor his wishes, no formal service is planned. Cremation has taken place. A gathering for family and friends will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the fellowship hall of Leland Community United Methodist Church, 106 Fourth St.
