---- — SPRUCE PINE, N.C. — James Arthur Thatcher, age 83, of Spruce Pine, N.C., died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine. Born on May 4, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harold and Roxie Walton Thatcher.
Mr. Thatcher was a proud graduate of Ohio State University and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Thatcher was a game warden in Ohio for five years and taught school at the Old Mission Peninsula School in Michigan for nine years. Also, he was the operator of an art gallery with his wife, Connie, for a number of years.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.
Mr. James Thatcher is survived by his wife, Connie D. Thatcher, of Spruce Pine, N.C.; his sons, William A. Thatcher, of Tucson, Ariz., Jon W. Thatcher and wife, Carol, of Billings, Mont., James T. Thatcher and wife, Deb, of Cobleskill, N.Y., and Joseph D. Thatcher, and fiancée, Laura Kalchik, of Asheboro, N.C.; his brother, Thomas O. Thatcher and wife, Rita, of Sequim, Wash.; and his granddaughters, Sam and Hannah Thatcher, of Billings, Mont., and Meredith Betts Smith and husband, Shane, of Greensboro, N.C.
A memorial service will be held in Michigan at a later date.
