TRAVERSE CITY — Robert K. Grant, age 91, of Traverse City, only son of August and Fannie Grant, passed away peacefully at home under hospice care Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.
Robert was on the track team at Detroit Central High School, where he was a sprinter in the 100 and 200-yard dashes. He was a City Champ in both events in 1939. At Wayne State University Mr. Grant was a member of the mile relay team with Bob Wingo, Lynwood Wright and Wayne Hatfield. Accompanied by their coach, D.L. Holmes, they traveled to Randall's Island, N.Y., in 1942 and won the national A.A.U. Championship, setting a new record.
Mr. Grant enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Third Armored Division. He was involved in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant.
After his military discharge, Mr. Grant was a physical education teacher for 32 years in the Detroit Public School System.
In 1946 he married Onerva Tervo. They had three children, Lyle, Lois and Lee; and four grandchildren, Daniel Sczomak, Kelly Sczomak, Kaisa Grant and Matti Grant.
Mr. and Mrs. Grant retired to Kaleva and then moved to Traverse City.
He is mourned by his wife; three children; daughter-in-law, Luz Maria (Cabrera); son-in-law, John Sczomak; and his four grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.
