---- — BEULAH — Edward L. McMullin, 93, of Beulah and Clermont, Fla., passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at The Homesteader in Benzonia. He was born in St. Louis, Mo., and spent his formative years in Detroit.
Edward was a graduate of Detroit’s Cooley High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree in education from Wayne State University. In high school and college he was a football standout, earning many city, county and state honors.
Edward served as a physical education instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.
At the end of the war he began his lifetime career in education, starting with teaching and coaching many sports at Detroit’s Highland Park High School. He was an assistant principal at Highland Park in 1969 when he accepted the position of principal at Benzie Central High School in Northern Michigan’s Benzie County.
Retiring in 1982 Edward spent winters in Clermont, Fla., and summers on Platte Lake. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, boating and traveling.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Jean; a daughter, Linda (Dave) Tranger, of North Webster, Ind.; a son, Kelly (Kitty Rosa) McMullin, of Steamwood, Ill.; grandchildren, Chad, Lisa, Shane and Adam; and great-grandchildren, Cory, Carson, Adrienne, Macayle and Aeryn.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Pastor Stephen Ayers officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Heart Association or to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
