Carson K. Bonn

TRAVERSE CITY — Carson Koning Bonn, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Carson was born on Sept. 25, 1918, in Coral, Mich., to the late Elmer H. and Ida (Parks) Bonn. On Nov. 18, 1939, he married Margaret R. Thaler in Greenville, Mich. She preceded him in death in 1996.

After attending Michigan State University and the University of Detroit, Carson began his career as a fire insurance engineer in Detroit and Saginaw. The couple moved to Traverse City in 1941, and Carson continued to work in the insurance industry there for more than 50 years.

During World War II, Carson served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Mechanized Calvary Recon Troop. The 144 members of the troop attached to the Army's 97th Division were sent to France in 1943 and stayed together for the next three years in Czechoslovakia, France and Germany. As a proud veteran, he traveled all over the country to attend annual Army reunions with his troop.

Carson was a kind-hearted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, and he enjoyed traveling in his retirement years. He took great pleasure in spending the winter months in his condominium overlooking the Gulf of Mexico in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Margaret and Carson joined Central United Methodist Church in 1942. Both were actively involved and served in a variety of roles over the years. Carson was also a member of the Rotary Club and a life member of the Masonic Lodge.

Carson is survived by his two daughters, Margaret (Harold) Miller of Ann Arbor, and Janet (Bernard) Fettig of Otisville; three grandchildren, Deborah (David) Benjamin, Denise (Chris) Brow and Todd (Erin) Fettig; seven great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, at Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dale Ostema will officiate.

Private graveside committal services will be held at the Coral Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Central United Methodist Church.
