ALDEN — Mark D. Thiel, of Alden, slipped away peacefully on May 17, 2014, after succumbing to cancer at the age of 57. Mark was born in 1957 to the late Donald and Ila (McKinnon) Thiel.
His childhood home was in Bridgeport, but he later resided in Florida and Alden.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
He most recently lived in Wyoming, where he worked for Flannery Machine and Tool.
Mark was a spiritual person who enjoyed gardening and shopping for antiques. He was a devoted father and loving grandfather.
His daughter, Nadeia Thiel, and his four grandchildren, Ila, Isaiah, Ethan and Amelia, survive him as well as many siblings, Dawn (Robert) Pepera, Lynn Thiel, Julie Fitzpatrick, Mary Comstock, Ross Thiel, Yvette (Jeff) Dopp and Karl (Anna) Thiel. He also leaves behind aunts, uncles and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His brother, Vaughn, sister, Sheryl and brother-in-law, Peter Fitzpatrick predeceased him.
Visitation will be held today, May 20, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme. Burial will take place at Helena Township Cemetery in Alden.
