TRAVERSE CITY — Hazel Mary Ames, 91, of Traverse City, formerly of Benzie County, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, surrounded by her loving family at Traverse Victorian Senior Living in Traverse City. She was born April 3, 1922, in Cadillac, the daughter of James and Lila (Campbell) Wallace. On Oct. 1, 1938, in Traverse City, Hazel married Orlein L. Ames.
Hazel enjoyed her friends at the Platte Grange Hall where she made handmade items for the less fortunate and area nursing homes.
She also enjoyed going to the Gathering Place, in Honor, where she had a good time with all of her friends and loved to dance.
Hazel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who liked baking for friends, neighbors and her family, especially all different kinds of Christmas cookies.
Hazel worked at different jobs and also on the farm doing everything that pertained to farming. One of her jobs that she really liked was baking at the Empire Air Force Base where she was employed for 11 years until it closed.
Afterwards she went to work for Bert and Helen Oleson until her husband, Orlein, passed away. Hazel then moved to Traverse City into a duplex that her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Charles Hammond, built so they could all live together.
Hazel is survived by her children, Betty (Charles) Hammond of Traverse City, and Jim (Carolyn) Ames of Honor; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, June Sherriff; her brothers, George (Shirley) Wallace, and Ralph (Emily) Wallace; her sister-in-law, Evelyn Wallace; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Orlein Ames; her parents; her granddaughter, Angela Ames; her sister, Myrtle Samiulaw; her brother, Robert Wallace, her half-brothers, Harold Sibley and Lewis Sibley; her half-sister, Virginia Schettler; her brother-in-law, Gerald Sheriff and her sister-in-law, Emily Wallace.
Memorial services will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, with Pastor Jane Lippert officiating.
