Richard M. Lundeen, M.D.

HONOR — Richard M. Lundeen, M.D., of Honor, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at his home on Platte Lake with his family by his side. He was born in Creston, Iowa, on Oct. 20, 1926, the son of Malvin and Lorraine Lundeen.

He lived in Des Moines and Ottumwa, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1945. He went to Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., and received his BA degree in 1949. In 1954 he graduated from The University of Iowa Medical School. Richard moved to Flint in 1955 to do his internship at Hurley Hospital and his family practice residency at McLaren Hospital.

He maintained a successful private family practice in Flint for 37 years (1956 to 1993) and retired to his home on Platte Lake in Honor in 1993.

Richard belonged to many professional organizations and was involved in many professional activities including the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Board of Family Practice, Member Genesee County Medical Society, Member Michigan State Medical Society, Member American Medical Association, Westwood Heights Board of Education (1961 to 1964) and Carman High School Board of Education (1969 to 1973).

One of Richard’s greatest loves was being involved in sports medicine at the high school level. He was the team doctor at Hamady High School from 1961 to 1964. He then moved on to Ainsworth High School in 1966. When Carman High School opened 1967 he became the team doctor and could be seen roaming the sidelines every Friday night until 1983. He was inducted into the Carman-Ainsworth Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002 for his outstanding service to the athletes of Ainsworth and Carman High Schools. He also received the Bruin Club of Genesee County Sports Medicine Award in 1983.

Richard married the love of his life, Marilyn Provan, in 1955. They had four children, Gregg (Donna) Lundeen, of Indianapolis, Ind., Janis (Jeff) DeVree, of Grandville, Scott (Sandra) Lundeen, of Annandale, N.J., and Bruce (Jennifer) Lundeen, of Flint. They also had 10 wonderful grandchildren, Kelly (Justin) Dahlem, Haley and Jessica Lundeen, Jennifer and Jon DeVree, Graham, Chad and Kyle Lundeen, Matthew and Emily Lundeen. He loved spending time with all of his children and grandchildren at his home on Platte Lake. He is also survived by brothers, Dave and Jim; and sisters-in-law, Shirley and Ruth.
