CHARLEVOIX — Betty Lou Kewagshken, 76, of Charlevoix, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Bortz Health Care in Petoskey.
She was born Dec. 1, 1937, in Charlevoix, to Guy and Susan (Tepakeyah) John. She married Hersel Kewagshken in October of 1958, and he preceded her in death on 1975.
She enjoyed bead-work, arts and crafts, Bingo, garage sales and going to the casino, but most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
Betty is survived by her son, Ronald L. John, of Traverse City; daughter, Anna (Gary) Smith, of Charlevoix; brothers, George McClellan, of Bay Shore, Thurlow âSamâ (Joyce) McClellan and Steve McClellan, all of Traverse City; sisters, Evelyn Didrickson, of Anchorage, Alaska, Elizabeth Crockett, Carol Fields and Virginia Fields, all of Bay Shore; and half-brother, Patrick Shomin, of Elkhart, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth; sister, Arlene; and brothers, Levi and Randy.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Greensky Hill Indian Mission United Methodist Church in Charlevoix. The Reverend Sam McClellan and Tribal Shaman Joe Mitchell conducted the service. Interment will take place near Betty’s grandfather, Peter John Wabanimkee, at Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix this summer.
