---- — LAKE LEELANAU — Marthabel Stewart Nelson, of Lake Leelanau, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born Dec. 6, 1921, in Union City, Ind., the daughter of the late Alfred and Dorlie (Cramer) Stewart.

She graduated from Benzonia High School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and a Registry in Medical Technology from the University of Michigan.

She married Herbert Nelson in Northville in 1947.

Marthabel worked with penicillin research for the Upjohn Company in Eloise, worked as a lab technician in the Kaiser Fraiser automotive factory in Ypsilanti and as senior lab technician at Maybury Sanatorium in Northville.

Upon retirement from the medical field and her husband’s subsequent retirement from Union Oil they developed their own picture framing and art supply business in Livonia. After retiring from that business Marthabel and Herbert moved to Lake Leelanau, where they enjoyed many wonderful summers there while spending their winters at River Bend Resort in Brownsville, Texas.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Nelson, of Lake Leelanau; two sons, Cmdr. Stuart A. Nelson, of Washington, D.C., and Travis A. Nelson, of Traverse City; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Lee Marble; and her sister, Mary Louise Smith.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m., Little Swedish Cemetery in Good Harbor.

Memorial contributions in Marthabel’s name may be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland or a charity of the donor’s choice.
