CADILLAC — Betty Marie Mitchell passed away peacefully in her home in Cadillac on the evening of Saturday, June 15, 2013. She was 79.
Betty was born on June 22, 1933 in Coldwater, Mich. to Anna M. and Sidney A. Coffman. She attended Kalamazoo Central High School and later graduated from The Battle Creek School of Practical Nursing in 1953. She enjoyed a successful career as a nurse, working at Borgess Hospital, and then for the private practice of Dr. Gerald Rigterink in Kalamazoo. She also worked as an in-home nurse in the Cadillac area after her children left for college.
She married Jack Alfred Mitchell, formerly of Mancelona, at the Central Methodist Church in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Jan. 8, 1960 and moved to Cadillac, where they enjoyed 53 wonderful years of marriage. She found joy in helping others, along with cooking, family trips, being outdoors, spending time with her family, and watching the Detroit Tigers.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Mitchell of Cadillac; son, Mark (Jennifer) Mitchell of Cadillac; daughter, Julie Mitchell of Bend, Ore.; her grandchildren, Jacob and Sarah Mitchell; nephews Phillip (Faye) Coffman, Timothy (Wendy) Coffman, Thomas Coffman, and niece Margaret-Ann (Robert) Woodhams; cousins, Ray (Regina) Peterson, William Hierlihy, Barbara Jean Hierlihy-King, Maxine Wilks, and Barbara Wilks, survivor of cousin Norman Wilks.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Coffman, father Sidney Coffman, brother James Coffman, and her sister-in-law, Eleanor Coffman.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., today, June 19, with a luncheon to follow at the Cadillac United Methodist Church, 1020 E. Division Street, Cadillac. Burial services will be held afterward at the Mancelona Fairview Cemetery at the intersection of State Street (M-88) and Cedar River Road, Mancelona.
