Margaret Agnes Telford

Traverse City Record-Eagle

---- — ELK RAPIDS — Margaret Agnes Telford (nee Foster) was embraced by her Lord on May 25, 2013. She was born in Detroit the oldest daughter of James and Mary Foster (nee Rea) on Feb. 7, 1926.

A child of the Depression, she was a frugal saver her entire life. Suffering from a lung infection as a child, she was fortunate to recover in northern Michigan, where she discovered one of the loves of her life, Torch Lake. Margaret was raised in a two story flat with her sisters, Rea and Pat, a dog and her extended family.

She met another love of her life in adult Sunday school at Cadillac Avenue Presbyterian Church. She married Bill on Oct. 15, 1948. She had two sons, Bill and Alan, also the loves of her life.

Margaret worked her adult life as a secretary.

She had close friends from her first job that turned into the “gang” as they got married and had families of their own. The gang was like an extended family with “aunts and uncles and cousins” even though they weren’t related. Progressive dinners, card parties and Halloween parties are only a few of the good times spent with friends and their families.

Hard work and frugality along with some major prodding from her husband allowed Margaret to buy a lot on Torch Lake. A cottage was built and a lifetime of wonderful memories came from all the trips to the lake and the time spent there with family and friends.

A big adventure in her life was taking the family to Argentina when her husband Bill was transferred there. She enjoyed the culture and the wonderful people she met even if she had to rely on her sons for translation! The extended trip the family took on the way back to Michigan allowed them to see some of South and Latin America.

Margaret retired as an executive secretary from an automotive paint company. While she missed her friends, she enjoyed her retirement. She enjoyed traveling with Bill and their friends. Her summers were spent at the lake and the winters were spent in Scottsdale, Ariz. Her life was filled with her family, her faith and her friends. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bill; and her two sons and their wives, Bill and Becki and Alan and Shawn. Also surviving are her two grandsons, Luke and Spencer; and her younger sisters, Rea Ciliax and Pat and Terry O’Hara.

A memorial service will be held on June 22 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association or the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids.

The family is being served by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, Grand Rapids; (616) 940-7333.
