Gary P. Chippewa

PORT HURON – Gary Peter Chippewa, 58, of Port Huron, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013, at Port Huron Hospital. Gary was born Aug. 2, 1954, in Northport, the son of the late Louise Mae Chippewa.

Gary was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Gary was a jack of trades and could fix anything and fix them right. He was organized and neat; you couldn’t move things in his house without him noticing. He enjoyed a game of pool at the bar.

He liked to fish and take a dip in the river. Gary enjoyed cooking, sports and loved the Pistons, Tigers, Lions and Red Wings. He played the lottery like it was his job. Gary loved country music and bicycle riding; he owned three 10-speeds and would take his son, Eric, on bike rides.

He was a loving father and grandfather and loved spending time with his granddaughter, Tristen, and grandson, Wyatt.

Gary is survived by his son, Eric K. Chippewa; two grandchildren, Tristen and Wyatt Chippewa; six brothers, Wyman Chippewa, of Mt. Pleasant, Terry Petoskey and Glen Petoskey, both of Traverse City, John Petoskey, of Suttons Bay, William Petoskey, of Oakland, Calif., and Gregory Petoskey, of Peshawbestown; 10 sisters, Leona May, of Alabama, Glenda and Joan Petoskey, both of California, Eliza, Joyce Petoskey and Donna Swallows, of Peshawbestown, Diane Taula, of Traverse City, and Janice Petoskey, of Detroit; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Brenda Whiteye and Karen Nicholas; and two brothers, Robert and Stephen Petoskey.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, April 19, at Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Peshawbestown, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery, Peshawbestown. Father Andrew G. Buvala will officiate.

Memorials may be directed to a charity of one’s choice.
