---- — NORTHPORT — The Trumpet is Silent — Robert L. Crane died Monday, April 15, 2013 at his home in Northport. Bob was known for his dedication to education, his love for playing the trumpet and writing for publications.
Bob was born in Mt. Pleasant to Lloyd W. Crane and Maxine (Duncan) Crane on March 22, 1937. Bob graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1955 and continued his passion for education at Central Michigan University where he earned a bachelor of music education degree in 1959, master of arts degree in 1960 and an Ed.S. in school administration in 1973. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in educational administration from Michigan State University in 1976.
His career as a band teacher in Michigan included Bullock Creek Schools in Midland, Bellevue Community Schools, Sterling Junior High School in Utica, and Central Junior High School in Saginaw. Bob’s professional career as a school administrator included superintendent of the Boy’s Detention School in Durand, Ill. During his 28 year career in Saginaw, he was assistant principal for curriculum development and then principal at Webber Jr. High School, deputy principal of Averill Career Opportunity Center and then retired in 1993 as principal at South Intermediate School.
He taught graduate courses at Saginaw Valley University and CMU as an adjunct professor. As an educational writer, he published over 25 articles in various educational journals.
He played trumpet in the Beloit Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw Eddy Concert Band, Northwestern Michigan Community College Band and the Northport Community Band.
Civic organizations included Saginaw Downtown Lions Club, Saginaw Art Museum Board of Directors and The Saginaw Salvation Army Board of Advisors. Honors bestowed upon Bob were the Phi Delta Kappa Leadership Award and Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals-Principal of the Year finalist.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet Ann; son Donald and daughter-in-law Alma; grandchildren, Thomas and Aislinn Crane.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Doris Ann Rice and Janis Cole.
A church service in his honor will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Northport, Mich. Father Tom Otis will officiate. A celebration of life is planned for July 7, 2013 in Northport.
