ABINGDON, Va. — Arlisle Augusta Gillespie, 75, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Nov. 18, 2013, in Abingdon, Va. She died peacefully at home from a prolonged battle with cancer. Arlisle was born June 29, 1938, in Goodrich.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Abernethy and Audrey Chambers Abernethy, of Flint; her husband, R. Martin Gillespie, of Traverse City; sister, Luetta LeQua, of Milford; and brother, Delmer Abernethy, of Deltona, Fla.
She is survived by her sister, Alice Wood, of Flint; daughters, Elizabeth Cottrill (Scott), of Abingdon, Va.; Laurie Eakes Skonicki (Eugene), of Houston, Texas; stepdaughters, Deborah Kelp, of Flushing, and Brenda Johnson, of Grand Rapids; as well as nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Arlisle graduated from Flint Technical High School and attended Mott Community College.
She worked for General Motors Institute (Kettering University) from 1961 to 1981 and Weyerhauser Company from 1982 to 1998.
Arlisle was a master gardener and a volunteer reading tutor with children in Traverse City and Abingdon. She was active in her church and Community Bible Study.
Arlisle was loved by all who knew her but her great-grandchildren were her special delight. She will be missed by all.
Services will be held in Virginia.
