---- — TRAVERSE CITY — John Sweet “Jack” McCoy, 72, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Munson Medical Center.
Born Dec. 4, 1940, in Traverse City, he was the son of the late Robert Smith and Marion (Sweet) McCoy. On Oct. 8, 1960, at the First Christian Church, located at the corner of Eighth and Cass, he married the former Judy Ann Bannon, who passed away in 2003.
Jack attended local schools and later furthered his education at Michigan State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in forestry.
He then worked at the Weyerhaeuser Corporation and Wickes Lumber. With an inner desire to return to his home community of Traverse City Jack became co-owner and operator of Red Mill Lumber from 1980 to 1992. He then became very involved in real estate and years later purchased Century 21, a business he sold prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his two sons, Chris Allan McCoy, of Traverse City, and Michael John McCoy, of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Katie Ann McCoy and Jack McCoy Jr.; brother, Robert Smith (Sally) McCoy Jr., of Charleston, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a son, Kelly Wayne McCoy.
Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where the McCoy family will receive friends, on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. Following cremation, burial will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
In remembrance of Jack, memorials may be directed to the John S. McCoy College Fund for his two grandchildren. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
