---- — BEAR LAKE — Leonard Wood Olson, age 86, of Bear Lake, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late John B. and Elizabeth (Shaw) Olson.

Leonard enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on March 7, 1946, serving until his honorable discharge on March 22, 1947.

After serving his country Leonard attended Roosevelt College in Chicago. He graduated in 1952 with his degree in economics.

Leonard worked as an economist for the Bureau of Labor and Statistics from 1952 to 1987. He also taught economics at various schools and ended his career as a professor of economics at Northwest Michigan College in Traverse City.

Leonard married Marilynn June Erdmann on Aug. 10, 1957, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee. She preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 2006, after 47 years of marriage.

He was actively engaged in politics throughout his life and served as a Leelanau County Commissioner for 12 years. Leonard was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis in Traverse City, Traverse City Rotary Club, American Legion Post in Chicago, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was actively involved in the Shriners and Masonic Lodges.

Leonard is survived by his two sons, Leonard II, aka “Duce” (Sue) Olson, of Traverse City, and Douglas (Kitti) Olson, of Green Bay, Wis.; five grandchildren, Anabelle, Benjamin, Melissa, Aidan and Sophie; and brother, John B. Olson, of Seminole, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Marilynn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Oak Grove Funeral Home, with Pastor Justin Grimm officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, July 20, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home, and again on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service. Burial will follow at Old School House Cemetery in Brown Township.
