GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Geraldine Rosalie “Rose" Hansen, nee Scharmen, passed away on Jan. 29, 2013, in Gainesville, Fla. She was 78.
Rose was born Feb. 23, 1934, in Kingsley, to Oscar and Geraldine (Konruff) Scharmen, one of five daughters. On May 11, 1962, she married James Burton Hansen, who preceded her in death.
Rose earned her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and her master’s degree in early childhood development from Central Michigan University.
She started in occupational therapy and art education but then spent most of her teaching career in special education with the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District. She worked with the homebound, in the classroom, in administration, and most often with the youngest handicapped children.
Rose enjoyed painting, reading and writing poetry and reading extensively about history, sociology, religion and psychology.
Rose is survived by her daughters, Carrie Michelle “Mikki” Stagman, of Traverse City, and Ericka “Ricki” Hansen Midtgard, of High Springs, Fla.; her grandchildren, William, Matthias, Walter and Anne Hoover, all of Traverse City; and a great-granddaughter, Violet Harrington, of Traverse City.
A memorial service will be held at the Traverse City History Center, 322 Sixth St., on July 27 at 11 a.m.
