INTERLOCHEN — Alethea “Lee” Isabel Kendall, 74, of Interlochen, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014. Lee was born on July 6, 1940, in Gothem-burg, Neb., to the late John W. and Buford (Groenwold) Toberer.
Lee married her husband, the late John W. Kendall, in Battle Creek on May 24, 1964, and the couple had one daughter together. They moved from Mattawan to Traverse City in 1972.
Lee worked as a server at the Milliken Tea Room and Sugarloaf Lodge for many years and later at the Courtyard by Marriot.
She loved all the holidays and was fond of wearing a sweatshirt celebrating the holiday occasion.
She had a strong marriage with her husband, John, and loved her family deeply, displaying photos of everyone in most of the rooms of her home.
Lee enjoyed gardening and was known for having a “green thumb.” She could grow and save almost any ailing plant. She enjoyed country music and was an avid fan of local morning radio host Jack O’Malley.
Lee is survived by a daughter, Karmel Lee (David) Clark, of Interlochen; stepdaughters, Kathy Halligan, of Lansing, Karla (John) Johnson, of Lansing, and Kerry (Donald) Briggs, of Parish, Fla.; stepson, Steven Vanneste, of Lansing; brother, Neal Rodney Toberer (Sharon), of Broken Bow, Neb.; grandchildren, Madison Rose Clark, Samantha Lee Clark, Raymond Clark, Jordyn Clark, Heather Trentadue, Gregory (Nicole) Carroll, Douglas (Ann) Vanneste, Victoria (Drew) Cataldo, Daniel Vanneste, Jennifer (Kendrick) Elkins, and Jacque (Jay) James; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lee was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Wesley Kendall; stepdaughter, Connie E. Vanneste; and stepson, Charles Kendall.
Following Lee’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 a.m., on Monday, July 14, 2014, at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church, 1200 Ramsdell Road, Traverse City.
