TRAVERSE CITY — Muriel Ruth Long, 90, of Traverse City, passed away on July 8, 2014. She was born on Dec. 27, 1923, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Maud and Charles Thomas.
Muriel graduated from Shaker Heights High School in Ohio in 1941. She later earned her bachelor’s degree from U of M in 1946 and her master’s degree in library sciences from Western Michigan University in 1961.
Muriel married William Thomas Long on July 15, 1947, in Beachwood, Ohio. He preceded her in death in 1993.
She held many different positions in her life, children’s librarian at the Traverse City public library, assistant director at the Ingham County Library, assistant librarian at the science library at MSU and was the director at the TBA materials center in Traverse City.
In her free time Muriel enjoyed gardening, crocheting afghans and reading.
Muriel is survived by her children, Anne (Ken) Dietzel, Robert (Holly Knibbs) Long and Jean (Don) Wheelock; grandson, Bill (Beth) Dietzel; and great-grandchildren, Allison Jean Dietzel, Jenna Marys Dietzel and Samuel Robert Dietzel.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, William.
No services will be held at this time.
