BENZONIA — Ruth Alice “Raye” Hudson Rosen, Ph.D, 92, of Benzonia, died on Dec. 31, 2013. She was born Aug. 2, 1921, daughter of Roy David Hudson and Florence (Brown) Hudson in Marion, Ind. She moved around often in Illinois and Ohio as a child and lived with her mother in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, as an adolescent after her parents divorced.
In addition she put herself through school, obtaining a B.A. degree in sociology from Rockford College in Illinois, an M.A. from Columbia University, writing her thesis on Workers’ Education, and a Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University.
Raye married Hjalmar Rosen in 1954 when they both worked at the University of Illinois in the Champaign-Urbana area. They adopted two daughters and she enjoyed being a stay at home mother while raising her daughters before working in the Sociology Department at Wayne State University in Detroit.
In 1981 she and her partner, Lois Martindale, purchased their Benzonia home.
When she retired she began to fulfill long-held dreams of travel to England and France, Kenya and Tanzania, Antarctica, Alaska, many places in Mexico and numerous spots in the continental United States, including a raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
She became interested in healing, holistic health, Tai Chi and Yoga. Because of her interest in understanding dreams Raye started a local dream group. She read voraciously, wrote memoirs for her children and other descendents and especially enjoyed spending time with family, walking on the shore of Lake Michigan and taking care of her dogs and cats. She was also a collector of indigenous art and appreciated other art and music. She loved the out-of-doors, birds and the quietness and spaciousness of her property.
Raye is survived by her life partner of 39 years, Lois Martindale; daughters, Margot Allen and Holly Rosen (Robin Orsborn); grandchildren, Devin Rosen, Kelsey Rosen and Nicholas Orsborn; former husband, Hjalmar (Shirley) Rosen; nieces, Beth Arnold-Scanlon (Bob Scanlon), Bree Scanlon (Shard Pierre), Seraphina Elizabeth-Scanlon Pierre, Keeley Scanlon (Ray Bailey) and Eleanor Bailey; and many friends.
