TRAVERSE CITY — Herbert Ryan, 86, of Beulah, died Monday, June 30, 2014, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Oct. 26, 1927, in River Rouge, the son of Donald and Grace (Mesic) Ryan.
Herbert was discharged from the United States Army after earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He went on to join the Masons in 1949. Following many years of employment at Champion Spark Plug, Herbert retired in 1986.
Herbert was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to duck and deer hunt and go fishing on Lake St. Clair. He also enjoyed going to the casino with his wife.
Herbert is survived by his children, Valerie (Charles) Meldrum of Algonac, Mich., Patricia (Craig) Smith of Frankfort, Mich. and Gregory (Cheryl) Ryan of Benzonia, Mich.; his grandchildren, Laura, Charles, Jessica, Rochelle, Cari, and Tracie; great-grandchildren, Briana, Emilie, Olivia, Ryan, Justin, Kelcie, and Carson, who will be born in July.
Herbert was preceded by his parents; and by his wife, Mary E. Ryan in 2004.
Army and Military Funeral Honors will be conducted at 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Benzie County Meals on Wheels.
