ELK RAPIDS — David D. Lockhart, 90, died peacefully on June 25, 2014, at Munson Hospice House. He was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Jackson, to David and Nan Lockhart.
He graduated from Jackson High School in 1942, Jackson Junior College in 1948, Central Michigan University with his B.A. in 1951, the University of Michigan with his M.A. in 1954 and Eastern Michigan University with his M.S. in physics in 1971. He also attended Holly Cross University in Massachusetts on a National Science Foundation Scholarship for physics in the summers of 1967 and 1968.
In November 1942 David enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Signal Corps attached to Hq Battery 224th Field Artillery Group. While in the Army he also attended Syracuse University and American University in Schrivenham, England. He was discharged in April 1946.
Mr. Lockhart taught physics and math at Allen Park High School from 1951 to 1983. During his years at Allen Park he was also a class advisor, directed several junior class plays, coached the golf team, initiated an audio-visual aids program and was the announcer for football and basketball games. He had several articles published in Popular Electronics, The Physics Teacher and Science Teacher’s Workshop.
In 1951 David married Nell C. Falconer, of Scottville. They had two children, Lee Alan and Lynn Ann.
After retirement they spent 27 winters in Tucson, Ariz., and the rest of their time in Elk Rapids. They enjoyed camping, fishing, golf, bridge and hiking. Their greatest hike was to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. They also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and overseas. Mr. Lockhart also created crossword puzzles and other word puzzles for publication.
Mr. Lockhart is survived by his wife, Nell Lockhart; their children, Lee (Joyce) Lockhart, of Friendswood, Texas, and Lynn (Randy) Guernsey, of Clark Lake; and four wonderful grandchildren, Jerod and Jason Lockhart, of Texas, and Katie and Kyle Guernsey, of Michigan.
