TRAVERSE CITY — Charles “Charlie” Gill, 71, of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Tendercare-Birchwood. Charlie was born on March 2, 1943, in Traverse City. After he was abandoned by his parents, Doris Shumsky, a kind hearted nurse at Munson, offered to take him home for a short time, which stretched into a lifetime. Doris, along with the help of her first husband, Anthony “Tony” J. Shumsky, and second husband, Rayburn Young, took great care of Charlie. Charlie was not an easy child to care for, however; he loved riding his bike on adventures and playing with his many pets. A sister of Doris, Eula Pray, also took pride in helping Charlie. She taught him simple things and also played ball with him on the playground.
Charlie is survived by cousins of Doris and several members of the Shumsky family.
Charlie will be laid to rest at 1 p.m. on June 30, 2014, at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Anyone wishing to pay respects may do so at that time.

The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
