GAYLORD — Shirley Mae Janisse, age 87, of Gaylord, passed away on June 24, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley was born on Oct. 15, 1926, to Clifford and Elsie (Cooper) Thomas in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. On June 18, 1949, she married Lawrence Janisse. Together they raised 11 children.
Shirley began her nursing career when she joined the American Nursing Corps during World War II. She was a critical care nurse for 25-plus years at Mt. Clemens General and at Otsego Memorial Hospital upon their move to Gaylord in 1985.
Shirley loved to travel and had the privilege of seeing the world with her husband and family by her side. She was an outdoor enthusiast and the Gaylord region fulfilled her love of skiing and golf. She took many sailing vacations with her brother, Don. Shirley was a gifted seamstress, sewing her own fashions as well as her daughter’s wedding gowns and bridal party dresses. Her friends and bridge games were always something that she looked forward to.
She was simply a joy to be around and will be deeply missed by everyone.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Larry; their children, Michele Bonneville, of Tampa, Fla., Suzanne Bonafede, of Los Angeles, Calif., Alison (Edward) Hamlin, of South Lyon, Lisa (Robert) Ternes, of Shelby Twp., Marla (Axel) Brandt, of Clinton Twp., Richard (Patricia), of Sterling Heights, Randall (Susan), of Warren, Mark (Marianne), of Canton, Joel (Henny), of China, Darryl (Flynn), of Phoenix, Ariz., and Thomas Janisse, of Troy, Ill.; 18 grandchildren with another arriving soon; three great-grandsons; and sister, Lynda (Michael) Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Thomas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 1 p.m., from St. Mary Cathedral, with Father James Bearss officiating. Visitation with take place at the Nelson Funeral Home today, June 26, 2014, from 2 to 8 p.m., and at the Cathedral on Friday, beginning at noon until the time of service. A rosary recitation with Father Wilfrid Janisse will be offered at the funeral home on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at 6 p.m.
