NORTHPORT — Christian Paul Nielsen, 61, of Northport, formerly of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, died peacefully at the family farm on Thursday, June 12, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. Chris was born in Flint on Oct. 30, 1952, to his surviving parents, Norman and Pauline Nielsen.
Chris loved the water, sailing and his Scandinavian heritage. For Chris, life was an adventure and he saw the best in everyone.
Chris leaves behind his wife, Maria; his children, Erik, Nicole (Joseph) Ruthkowski, Christian, Adriana, Gabriela and Alejandra; a granddaughter, Sofia; sisters, Shirley (Craig) Beardslee and Jeannette (Thomas) Witt; nephews, Craig Jr., Brett and Jon; nieces, Sarah and Emily; aunt, Katherine and uncle, Don Willis; several beloved cousins; and special friends, Deena, Brian, Chris, Jim and Dean.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., with the wake service to be held at 7 p.m., on Friday, June 20, at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Chris’ ashes will be interred on Saturday, June 21, at 11:30 a.m., in Leelanau Township Cemetery of Northport. The Rev. Tom Otis will officiate. Per his wishes, some of Chris’ ashes will be scattered on his special hill at the family farm and his cherished island of Puerto Rico.
