TRAVERSE CITY — James Bernard Whelan Jr. went to his Lord on July 21, 2013. Jim was born in St. Paul , Minn., on April 11, 1937. After living in Illinois for many years Jim spent the last 18 years in Traverse City.
Jim served in the U.S. Air Force for close to 40 years with the last in the Reserves at Chicago O’Hare Airport.
Jim worked for 17 years at Maxbauer Ace Hardware to “get him out of the house.”
He was also a member of the American Legion.
Jim loved God, his family, friends, reading mysteries, building model airplanes, his long-suffering Minnesota Vikings and all things Irish.
Beside his family, Jim’s greatest thrill was his trip to Ireland with many family members to stand on the Hill of Tara where Irish High Kings ruled.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; his children, Sean Whelan, of Traverse City, Lynne Whelan, Beverly (Tom) England and Kelly Noble, all of Chicago, and Michael (Tiffany) Whelan, of Indiana. He was the proud grandfather of Brian Whelan, Tommy England, Tricia (Jonathan) Dominguez, Taylor England, Trevor England, Kristopher Noble and Evan Towns; and great-grandfather to Nola Dominguez. Jim is also survived by his beloved sister, Pat (Marty) Strub; and brother-in-law, Patrick (Eileen) Gallagher. Jim was uncle to Katie Ellis, Karin Strub and Megan and Jimmy Gallagher.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Beth (Hutchinson) Whelan.
