Emma Jean Horn

NORTHPORT — On June 18, 2013, Emma Jean Horn went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jean was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Dearborn, to James Roy and Marquerite (Walsh) Denney.

She married Arvid A. Horn in 1955 in Flint. They met while both were students at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. They made their home in Flint, where they raised three sons.

Jean completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Michigan – Flint in 1975.

She enjoyed teaching for 14 years in Christian schools, most of which was spent at the First Baptist Academy in Fenton. Jean especially enjoyed teaching first and second graders to read. During her retirement years she volunteered as a tutor in reading.

Jean and her husband were members of Maranatha Baptist and South Baptist Churches in Flint. In 1989 upon retirement they moved to Traverse City, where they were members of East Bay Calvary Church.

In 1998 they made their cottage in Northport their primary residence and began to spend four months of the winter in Lakeland, Fla. In 2010 Jean and Arvid sold their properties in Florida and Northport and became residents of the Northport Highlands.

In Northport they have been members of the Northport Covenant Church.

During retirement Jean enjoyed some cross country skiing and tennis. Music was a great source of enjoyment to her. She greatly appreciated concerts at Northport Community Arts Center.

Jean is survived by her sons, Peter Horn, of Grand Blanc, John Horn, of Suttons Bay, and Matthew Horn, of Ferndale; a grandson, Erik Horn, of Grand Blanc; a brother, Gerald (Mary) Denney; and three nieces and families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arvid A. Horn on Oct. 23, 2012.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 22, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at the Northport Covenant Church. Burial will follow the service in Leelanau Township Cemetery of Northport. The Reverend Jerry Lange will officiate.
