TRAVERSE CITY — James Richard “Jim” Thayer, 83, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at his home.
He was born on July 14, 1930, in Traverse City the son of Gerald Albert and Lenora Gene (Baker) Thayer.
He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War.
Jim was a postal clerk for 30 years with the Traverse City Post Office; retiring in 1982.
He loved being outdoors and tending to his property at Strawberry Point on Duck Lake. He also loved to ride his bike. One Labor Day weekend he rode over 30 miles.
Jim is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Brown) Thayer of 40 years; they were married on Nov. 2, 1973, in Traverse City; his children, Cheryl (Joe) Cause of Maine, David (Carrie) Thayer of Traverse City, Lenora Hutchinson of Maine and Timothy Covert of Georgia; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; siblings, Michael (Carolyn) Thayer, Phyllis Meachum and Richard Thayer all of Traverse City and his loving cat, Jesse.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Thayer and daughter, Anita Schmidt.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City with Pastor Tim Morris officiating. The family will greet friends starting at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.
