George W. Lobdell Died Oct. 12, 2013

TRAVERSE CITY — George William Lobdell, 88, of Interlochen, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. He was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Bethel, Mich. the son of Herbert and Elizabeth (Knouse) Lobdell.

George was a U.S. Army Veteran. He served his country honorably as a combat infantryman and postal clerk during World War II. During his service, George earned several citations and medals, including the Combat Infantry European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the 11th Infantry Victory Medal.

George went on to become a Michigan State Police trooper. During his 34 years of service, he was stationed at the Reed City, Rockford and South Haven Posts. Upon his retirement in 1982, he had reached the rank of First Lieutenant VII.

George was a member of the Grant United Methodist Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Rockford Masonic Lodge and the Big Rapids Elks.

George is survived by five children; Herb Lobdell of Interlochen, Daniel R. (Carla) Lobdell of Strafford, Mo., Sheryl A. (Mike) Wilson of Howard City, Mich., Sally L. (Ken) Rasch of Lowell, Mich., and David L. (Bonnie Opiela) Lobdell of South Haven, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine M. Lobdell on Nov. 25, 1998, and by his parents.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, with Pastor Colleen Wierman officiating. Funeral honors will also be conducted under the auspices of the US Army, the Cherryland VFW Post #2780, and the Michigan State Police.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grant United Methodist Church, or to Munson Hospice House.
