Dorothy I. Bussey

— NORTHPORT — Dorothy Irene Bussey, 91, of Northport, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.

Dorothy was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Cedar, the daughter of Daniel and Anastasia (Popa) Flees. In February 1946 at St. Wenceslaus Church of Gills Pier, she married Alvin Richard Bussey, who preceded her in death in 1957.

Dorothy was a graduate of Northport High School, during which time she was a spotter at Woolsey Airport as part of the pre-World War II war effort.

She also worked at Pete Eiken’s Restaurant (Stubb’s), Shady Trails Speech Camp and Northport and Traverse City Bakeries.

Dorothy loved sewing, crafts, gardening and canning.

She worked as a Rainbow Lady and was head housekeeper for many years at Leelanau Memorial Hospital.

Dorothy was a consummate garage sale shopper and bingo player.

Dorothy is survived by her four children, Karen Lawson, of Swartz Creek, Sandra (Gerald) Winowiecki, of Portage, Gregory Bussey, of Parchment, and Debra (Michael) Mann, of Omena; a sister-in-law, Emeline, of St. Louis; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter at birth, Margo; siblings, Elizabeth Dalzell-Bullis, Alexander, Raymond, Sylvester, Edmund, Lawrence and Daniel Flees.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., with the rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church of Northport. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery Lake Leelanau will be announced in the spring. Father Leonard Paul will serve as celebrant.
