Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — BENZIE COUNTY — On May 4, 2013, our hearts were saddened by the sudden passing of James “Jim” G. Searls from an apparent heart attack.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara J. Searls in July 2004.
He is survived by three children, James Searls Jr. (Karen), Kathy Bair (Paul) and Amy Friedrich (Larry); eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and Betty Croft, his companion of eight years.
Born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 7, 1929, Jim grew up in Detroit and Rancho Mirage, Calif. He met Barbara when they both attended Palm Springs High School. Jim attended Chaffey College in Ontario, Calif., and graduated from UCLA with a degree in business administration.
Jim’s career was with Burroughs Corporation, where he worked for 36 years in California and Michigan. He then worked for The Pace Group as a business trainer until retiring in 1995.
Upon retirement Jim and Barbara moved to Crystal Lake permanently.
Not a man to sit around Jim was very active in his church, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Munson Hospice and Interlochen Center for the Arts. Hospice had taken such great care of Barbara that Jim wanted to give back. It was through Munson Hospice that he met Betty. They were loving companions who volunteered and traveled together.
The most blessed part of Jim’s life was his relationship with his family. Jim’s greatest legacy is that whether he was with a family member, friend, hospice patient or community member, he made them feel they were the most important person.
Per his wishes, Jim was cremated. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church, 785 Benzie Highway, Beulah, Michigan.
In memoriam, contributions may be made to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 26, Beulah, MI 49617 or Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684; (231) 935-6482.
