NORTHPORT — On Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at Northport Highlands, Arvid A. Horn, 82, went from this earth to be forever joined in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Arvid was born in Northport on June 1, 1930, to Melvin and Linnea (Johnson) Horn. He was the grandson of Adolph and Mathilda Johnson and Alma and Fred Horn. Both couples were early Leelanau Township farmers who were immigrants from Sweden, Germany and Norway.
Following graduation from Flint Central High School in 1948, Arvid served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
In 1955 after graduation from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, he married Emma Jean Denney in Flint. In 1957 he completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Taylor University.
For 32 years he taught in the Flint school system, most of which was in a program for gifted children on the elementary level. He earned a master's degree at the University of Michigan.
Arvid enjoyed serving in many areas of Christian education at Maranatha Baptist Church in Flint. Later he was a member at South Baptist Church, also in Flint.
Upon retirement in 1989 Arvid and Jean moved to Traverse City, where they were members of East Bay Calvary Church. In 1998, they made their cottage in Northport their primary residence and began to spend winters in Lakeland, Fla.
Arvid enjoyed history, especially presidential biography. He also enjoyed biographical and architectural programs on television. Arvid enjoyed browsing through antique shops and flea markets. He valued owning some pieces of furniture that had been used in his grandparent's homes. It was his pleasure to own a number of antique clocks.
His retirement years in Northport were a great joy. Arvid was often a member of the coffee group in the mornings at Barb's Bakery and in the afternoon men's group at the Willowbrook. Having the family come to visit and spending time on the bay was always a delight. He and Jean were been members of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Northport.
In 2010 Jean and Arvid sold their Florida and Northport properties and became residents of the Northport Highlands.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Jean; and three sons, Peter, of Grand Blanc, John, of Suttons Bay, and Matthew, of Ferndale; and a grandson, Erik, who he found to be a great blessing.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Northport Covenant Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Leelanau Township Cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Lange will officiate.
