TRAVERSE CITY — Douglas Joseph Sladek passed away at Munson Medical Center on Sept. 10, 2013, at the age of 49. He was born at Munson Medical Center on June 26, 1964. He had suffered the past three years from Myelodysplastic Syndrome and host versus graft disease due to a bone marrow stem cell transplant.
He worked in construction up to the time of his diagnosis and was a very talented carpenter. Douglas took great pride in the design and building of his home and of a number of furniture pieces he constructed for others. He was a lover of the out-of-doors and spent much time hunting and fishing.
Surviving Douglas are his father, Terrance G. Sladek; his mother, Marise (Ted) Mattis; his sisters, Sallie (Steve) Montcastle and Mia Sheppard; his brother, Koa Sheppard; his fiancee, Julie James, her children, Matthew Miller, Brianna Miller, Rebecca James and Jayson (Missy) Engweiler and their three children; a stepbrother, Trevor Mattis; a niece, Jenna Montcastle; two nephews, Spencer Montcastle and Noah Montcastle; a step niece and nephew, Trevor and Makenzie Mattis; aunts and uncles, Gary (Geri) Sladek, Roger (Gean) Sladek, Karnig (Elaine) Sladek, Audrey Sladek, Robert LeCount, Marc (Karen) LeCount, Ned LeCount, Joc (Allison) LeCount, Andrew (Tina) LeCount, Denise (Glenn) Thomas, Maggie (Andrew) Stratton and Jane LeCount; and many cousins.
Douglas was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Leona Sladek and Robert and Margaret LeCount; and his uncle, Joseph Sladek.
Douglas was cremated and a memorial service was held Sept. 16, 2013.
