---- — LANSING — David R. Lantz, of Lansing, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at the age of 81. Dave was born on Feb. 12, 1932, to the late Fred G. and Helen E. Lantz.

Dave graduated from Portland High School and earned his B.S. from Central Michigan University. He received his master’s degree from CMU in 1964.

It was through his college music activities that he met his wife, A. Louise Lantz. They married in March of 1956.

Dave taught music in Mt. Pleasant, Charlotte and the Lansing School district, where he was a counselor at Otto Junior High and Gardner Middle School and retired after 31 years.

In the Lansing area Dave managed his own dance band, The Lancers, traveled with a big band, directed Grace United Methodist Church and the Steiner Chorale and founded the Pastor’s Quartet and the Ecumenical Men’s Choir. He also participated in the choir for the Elk Rapids Presbyterian Church.

Dave was a proud U.S. Navy veteran serving as the Chaplain’s assistant in Great Lakes, Ill., where he directed choirs including The Chanteymen.

Dave loved playing tennis and will be missed by his tennis partners.

Dave’s greatest pleasures were spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially at their cottage on East Grand Traverse Bay. He loved to spend time on the water and made sure everyone had a chance to ski before he took a turn himself. He had a servant’s heart, and nothing gave him more pleasure than to do something for his friends and family.

David is survived by his wife, A. Louise Lantz; two children, Lee Lantz (Carol), of Lansing, and Tammy Lantz, of Traverse City; grandchildren, Jeremy (Caitlin) Lantz, of Madagascar, Africa, Michelle Cools (Joshua), of Las Vegas, Nev., Jason (Amanda) Lantz, of Holt, Heather (Aaron) Johnson, of Detroit, Stephan Lantz and Jonathan Lantz, of Lansing; and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Caleb, Eliza, Victoria, Sarah, Eliana and Jack.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Grace United Methodist, with the Rev. Jane Ellen Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Palmer Bush & Jensen Delta Chapel in Lansing. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to Grace United Methodist Church, Lantz Family Missionaries ( or Eaton Community Palliative Care.
