CHARLEVOIX — Freda Winter, 82, of Charlevoix, passed away at her home on Nov. 7, 2013. Freda was born on June 27, 1931, in Flat Rock, Ind., to Ellsworth and Parilee Geilker. She moved to Michigan with her family while in school and graduated from Anchor Bay Rural Agricultural School in New Baltimore, Mich. She married John Winter on May 20, 1950, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Richmond, Mich., and raised five children.
Freda and her husband John lived in many communities throughout Michigan including Cheboygan, Coleman, Marenisco and East Jordan. Upon John’s death in 1987, Freda moved to Chipley, Fla., to be closer to her mother and sister, where she lived until 2002, when she returned to Michigan and set up her home in Elk Rapids. Freda was a full-time homemaker, but found time to develop as an artist, musician and gardener. She was generous with her gifts, and her gardens continue to thrive in the many homes she graced.
Freda was preceded in death by her husband, John; and sister, Ila (Jean) Smith.
She is survived by her sister, Carol Mikolowski of Algonac, Mich.; brothers, Richard (Barbara) Smith of Chipley, Fla., and Paul Potenteau of Hohenwald, Tenn.; and her five children, Lynda (Bill) Reid of Vulcan, Tom (Cindy) Winter of East Jordan, Sue (Gerard Schwind) Winter of Ellsworth, Bill (Carol) Winter of Westerville, Ohio, and Patrick (Monica) Winter of Springfield, Mass. Freda is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan. Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, a charity that Freda supported throughout her life and whose mission she held dear to her heart.
