TRAVERSE CITY — Josephine Fernandez, 92, of Traverse City, passed away Feb. 16, 2013, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Josephine was born March 28, 1920, in Ziesing, W.Va., to Antonio and America (Campa) Fernandez. Her parents arrived in the United States from Spain in 1913. From Ellis Island they went to West Virginia, later settling in Burgettstown, Pa. Of 16 children born to Antonio and America, 10 children survived (Lola, Virginia, Connie, Dora, Josephine, Mary, Joseph, Olivia, Isabel and Herman).
Josephine attended grade school and never lost her desire to read and learn, translating for Spanish neighbors. One such neighbor introduced her to his nephew, Louis Fernandez, from Fredonia, Kan. Josephine and Louis were married in 1944 and settled in Fredonia upon his return from serving in Germany in World War II. In 1958 they moved with their three children to Taylor, where their fourth child was born in 1960.
Josephine was a very hard worker and held several jobs before being a bank teller. After retirement she and Louis divided their time between Florida and Traverse City until his death in 1996.
Josephine devoted herself to others. She was an exceptionally loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who gave everyone lots of laughs. Her home was a gathering place for conversation, advice and good home cooking, especially pies.
Josephine remained in Traverse City after her husband’s death. In recent years she lived at the Pavilions on Dogwood, where she received outstanding care from very dedicated staff.
She was preceded in death by her son, William in 2010. He is survived by Juliana, of Traverse City.
Other survivors include her sister, Isabel Bouzas (Ramiro), of Redford; and her daughters, Connie (Richard Heady), of Albuquerque, N.M., Ramona (Donald Barry), of Ann Arbor, and Olivia (Mark Garner), of Traverse City. Josephine was very proud of her grandchildren, Louis Barry, Claire Garner, Jesse Fernandez and Mary Garner.
A memorial service will be held in March in the Detroit area. Interment will take place at Grandlawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan.
