---- — PESHAWBESTOWN — Laura M. “Pete” Bailey, 58, of Peshawbestown, left us to return to her ancestors on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Munson Medical Center.
She was born and raised on a Navajo reservation in Shiprock, N.M., on July 5, 1954, the daughter of Harry and Mary (Jack) Pete. On Oct. 7, 1983, in Chicago, she married Rudolph D. Bailey, who survives.
Laura was a spiritual leader of the Bailey family and always started family meals and occasions with a prayer in her native language that was specific to the occasion. A member of the prestigious Mud Clan, she often spoke of the time she would return to the earth from which she came.
She was an excellent cook, an outdoor enthusiast and loved hunting, fishing, hiking trails, mushroom hunting and being in the beautiful Michigan and Wisconsin outdoors.
In addition to her husband, Rudy, Laura is survived by her in-laws, Ruth (John) Bussey, Carol (Gary) Varda, Richard (Elaine) Bailey, Sally Bailey and Gregory Bailey; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her in-laws, Robert Bailey and Donald Bailey; nephew, Craig Bussey.
Visitation will be held today, Feb. 23, from 5 p.m. until the start of the 7 p.m. funeral service, at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Burial will take place privately at a later date.
