PETOSKEY — Mary Alice Whipple, 70 of Petoskey, died Oct. 8, 2012 at her home.
Mary Alice was born on Aug. 20, 1942 in Cadillac, Mich., the daughter of William and Dorothy (Hodges) Faunce. Mary Alice was raised in Cadillac and graduated from Cadillac High School in 1960. She earned an associated degree in nursing from Northwestern Michigan Community College and completed her BSN from the University of Michigan. The last half of her career shifted to home health care, first at Munson Medical Center and finishing with Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency.
In 1967, Mary Alice married Ron Whipple in Cadillac and he preceded her in death. On December 22, 1994, Mary Alice married John Thurman in Bellaire, Mich. and he survives.
She enjoyed camping, traveling, home design, and barbershop music. It was her love of barbershop music that lead her to become a member of Sweet Adeline's International. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey and volunteered with the Red Cross assisting in disaster relief across the United States.
Mary Alice is survived by her husband, John Thurman; three sons, Christopher Whipple, Michael (Sara) Whipple, and Matthew Whipple; two step children, Katherine Thurman and J. Michael Thurman; one grandchild, Soren Thurman; four sisters, Barb Laino, Dorothy Stenman, Judy (Rex) Smith; and Marge (Don) Van Dyke; and by a brother, Robert (Norma) Faunce.
A funeral service celebrating Mary Alice's life will be held on Friday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Petoskey. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, October 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stone Funeral Home of Petoskey.
